Barcelona have sacked head coach Xavi and are set to replace him with Hansi Flick

Barcelona made the decision to sack Xavi just a month after convincing him to stay on in the role. This move came as a surprise after the Spaniard had announced in January his desire to leave the club at the end of the season only to later reverse his decision. In his place, former Bayern Munich and Germany manager Hansi Flick is set to take over.

The decision to part ways with Xavi comes after his three-year tenure as head coach of Barcelona. Flick, who previously managed Bayern Munich and the German national team, is now primed to step into this prominent role. Xavi, a 44-year-old Spaniard, will lead Barcelona in their final game of the season against Sevilla on Sunday before parting ways with the club.

This decision to sack Xavi arrives a month after Barcelona managed to persuade him to remain as manager, despite his initial plans to depart at the end of the campaign. Reports from Sky in Germany suggest that Barcelona have reached a verbal agreement with Flick to become the new coach. The club has communicated their intentions to make an announcement regarding Xavi’s replacement in the coming days.

A statement from the Catalan club read: “FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world.”

As Xavi prepares to leave Barcelona, the team currently holds the second position in the table, heading into the final day of the season 12 points behind champions Real Madrid. During his time as head coach, Xavi led the Catalans to the Champions League quarter-finals, although they were ultimately eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain.

Notably, Xavi also secured the La Liga title for Barcelona in 2023 and then guided the team to victory in the Spanish Super Cup a few months later.
