Coco Gauff overpowered Dayana Yastremska to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros

Coco Gauff is set to compete against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the last 16, as the Italian achieved a remarkable milestone by advancing to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the very first time. Gauff’s journey to the fourth round of the French Open unfolded with a convincing victory over the hard-hitting Dayana Yastremska in straight sets during Friday’s match.

Yastremska, holding the 30th seed at Roland Garros, encountered challenges in maintaining consistency throughout the match, alternating numerous unforced errors with spectacular winners. Despite encountering an accumulation of errors from Yastremska in the opening set, Gauff confidently secured her lead. However, the third-seeded American displayed resilience in the later stages of the second set.

Yastremska managed to break Gauff’s serve twice in the second set, even achieving a break while trailing by a considerable margin and with Gauff serving for the match. Although Gauff had a match point at 5-2, she ultimately lost that game, leading to Yastremska breaking at the sixth attempt. The Ukrainian player further presented a challenging moment for Gauff at 15-40 during Gauff’s subsequent service game, as Yastremska aimed to swiftly even the score at five games each.

Nevertheless, Gauff demonstrated determination and ultimately secured the victory, claiming her second match point with the assistance of another error from Yastremska. Having triumphed as the reigning US Open champion and reaching the finals of the French Open in 2022, Gauff is poised to confront Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the last 16. Cocciaretto’s advancement to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time was solidified by her win against the 17th seed, Liudmila Samsonova, with a score of 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
