Mohamed Camara has received a four-match suspension following his actions of concealing anti-homophobia messages on his shirt during a match. The 24-year-old midfielder, who represents Mali internationally and plays for Monaco, placed white tape over the campaign logo on his chest during their victory over Nantes in Ligue 1 on 19th May.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) revealed that the decision to enforce the ban stemmed from Camara’s refusal to take part in activities aimed at raising awareness of the fight against homophobia. This incident prompted widespread discussion, with France’s sports minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, advocating for severe sanctions against Camara.

Notably, all Ligue 1 clubs exhibited the campaign logo on their kits during the final day of the season, accompanied by rainbow-colored emblems on team shirts – an endeavor led by the LFP, the governing body for the top two divisions of French football. It is important to note that Camara also covered up the rainbow emblem.

In response to the situation, the Malian Football Federation expressed solidarity with Camara, emphasizing the fundamental rights of players as citizens that must be safeguarded at all times. Β “players are citizens like any others, whose fundamental rights must be protected in all circumstances”. Meanwhile, Monaco’s chief executive, Thiago Scuro, voiced the club’s support for the LFP’s campaign while indicating that discussions with Camara would be held internally to address the matter comprehensively.
