Los Angeles Clippers have signed coach Tyronn Lue to a long-term contract extension

The LA Clippers have officially secured the services of Tyronn Lue under an extensive, fresh agreement, as declared by Lawrence Frank, the President of Basketball Operations.

In Frank’s words, “T Lue embodies all the qualities we seek in a head coach. He possesses exceptional tactical prowess and innate leadership skills that allow him to forge strong connections with individuals within the team, be it players or staff.” Reflecting on the past and present, Frank expressed, “Four years ago, the opportunity to bring T Lue on board was a privilege, and today, we feel equally blessed. There is no one better suited to lead our team than T Lue. He is an indispensable figure in the organization and will continue to be for a considerable period.”

Expressing his dedication, Lue stated, “This is where I belong. The past four years of coaching this team have been immensely rewarding, and I am eagerly anticipating a new chapter at Intuit Dome. I am thankful to Steve, Lawrence, and the entire organization for this opportunity. With our ownership, front office, roster, staff, and arena, we possess all the essential advantages to succeed both now and in the future, and I have full confidence in our ability to do so.”

Over his four-year tenure as the Clippers’ head coach, Lue has accumulated an impressive record of 184-134 (.579), leading the team to the postseason in three out of the last four seasons. Notably, during the 2023-24 season, Lue guided the team to a noteworthy 51-31 (.622) record, clinching the Pacific Division title for the third time in franchise history and securing the distinction of being the first Clippers’ head coach to secure back-to-back Coach of the Month awards.

Lue has steered the Clippers to four consecutive winning seasons, contributing to the team’s status of holding the longest active streak in the NBA, an impressive 13 seasons. Additionally, as the third-winningest head coach in franchise history, Lue led the team to its inaugural Western Conference Finals appearance in 2021.

Before his tenure with the Clippers, Lue served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2016 to 2018, amassing a commendable 128-83 (.607) record, guiding the team to three consecutive NBA Finals, and securing the franchise’s first NBA title in 2016. Notably, in the 2015-16 season, Lue became the fourth head coach since 1980 to clinch an NBA Championship in his debut year and the 14th individual to have attained a championship both as a head coach and a player.

Preceding his time in Cleveland, Lue was part of the Clippers’ coaching staff as an assistant coach from 2013 to 2014. Prior to that, he spent two years with the Boston Celtics as an assistant coach and director of basketball development. Hailing from Mexico, Missouri, Lue enjoyed an 11-season career in the NBA, celebrating championships in 2000 and 2001 with the Lakers.

Over the course of 554 career games, he maintained an average of 8.5 points and 3.1 assists. Lue’s collegiate journey saw him excel at the University of Nebraska, where he garnered recognition as First-Team All-Big 12 in 1998 and received the honor of having his jersey (No. 10) retired by the institution in 2017.
