Roy Hodgson step down as Crystal Palace manager after health scare; Oliver Glasner to take over as expected

Crystal Palace have officially announced that their manager, Roy Hodgson, has made the decision to step down from his position as the first team manager following a recent health scare. The 76-year-old was hospitalized after falling ill during a training session, but has since been discharged. Despite his recovery, Hodgson has chosen to part ways with the club, leaving behind a legacy spanning two stints with Palace and 200 games managed. The experienced former England manager leaves the team positioned 16th in the table, facing the threat of relegation with just five points separating them from the danger zone.

In his departing statement, Hodgson expressed his deep connection with the club, emphasizing its significance in his footballing journey. He conveyed gratitude for the opportunity to work with exceptional players and staff, stating, “This club is very special and means so much to me… I have fully enjoyed my time here across six seasons, as it has given me the chance to work with top class players and staff doing what I love every day.”

Recognizing the need for the club to plan for the future, especially in light of recent events, Hodgson made the decision to step aside, allowing the club to proceed with their plans for a new manager. He extended his appreciation to the club’s management, coaching staff, backroom team, and most notably, the players, expressing confidence in the team’s potential for success in the future.

In response to Hodgson’s departure, Palace chairman Steve Parish expressed deep appreciation for his contributions, acknowledging his pivotal role in the club’s continued presence in the Premier League. Parish emphasized Hodgson’s commitment, stating, “Quite simply, we owe our continued Premier League status to Roy.” He thanked Hodgson for his exceptional service and wished him the best for the future, noting that Roy will always be welcomed back at Selhurst Park.

As Palace navigates this managerial transition, former Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner is anticipated to assume the role. In the interim, the team will be led by coaching staff Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington for their upcoming fixture against Everton in the Premier League at Goodison Park on Monday evening.
