Naomi Osaka beaten on Grand Slam comeback as Coco Gauff storms through in Melbourne

In a thrilling first-round match at the Australian Open, Caroline Garcia managed to outplay Naomi Osaka, marking Osaka’s first Grand Slam appearance since 2022. After taking a break from last season to give birth to her daughter Shai in July, Osaka returned to the tennis scene at the beginning of this year, but unfortunately could not make a successful comeback to Grand Slam action. The 16th seed Garcia delivered a stunning performance, defeating the four-time major winner in straight sets, with a final score of 6-4 7-6 (7-2). Both players displayed impressive ball-striking abilities but also faced challenges with loose shots throughout the match.

During the opening set, Garcia capitalized on unforced errors from Osaka to secure a crucial break in the fifth game. Despite Osaka’s efforts, she was unable to break back. The second set proved to be a test of determination for Osaka as both players held their serves, leading to a 5-5 tie. Despite the intense battle, Garcia ultimately claimed victory in the second set tie-break, securing a place in the second round where she is set to face Poland’s Magdalena Frech.

On a brighter note, reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff demonstrated her prowess with a dominant 6-3 6-0 victory over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, securing her spot in the second round of the Australian Open. Gauff’s exemplary performance on Rod Laver Arena marked her first Grand Slam match since her triumph in New York in September. She efficiently brushed aside Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, winning nine consecutive games within an hour. Gauff’s remarkable display sets up an intriguing second-round clash with compatriot Caroline Dolehide. Notably, Gauff’s serve proved to be a significant asset, with her dropping just one point on her serve in the second set. She attributed her serving prowess to recent tips she received from Roddick, showcasing her eagerness to continuously improve her game and maximize her potential on the court at the Australian Open.
