FA to assess relevant information around Cusack’s death

The Football Association (FA) has recently confirmed that they will be conducting a review of the relevant information surrounding the tragic death of Maddy Cusack, a player for Sheffield United who passed away at the young age of 27 last September. After the opening and adjournment of an inquest into her death the following month, Sheffield United launched an external investigation. In December, it was announced that this investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing by anyone connected with the club. However, the FA has decided to initiate their own review of the matter.

According to a statement from an FA Spokesperson as reported by The Guardian, the FA expressed their devastation upon learning of Maddy Cusack’s passing and extended their ongoing support to her family and loved ones during this difficult time. The FA highlighted the appropriateness of assessing the relevant information of the case in order to understand whether any further action is required under their jurisdiction within football, and to determine what steps, if any, may be appropriate. They also mentioned being in dialogue with Maddy’s family and the club throughout this process.

The FA’s decision to conduct a review comes after The Athletic reported the details of a seven-page complaint filed by Cusack’s family following her death. This report includes a wide range of grievances from Cusack’s last seven months with the club, which coincided with Jonathan Morgan’s appointment as head coach. It’s worth noting that Morgan stepped away from his role while the independent investigation took place in October but has since returned to work earlier this month.

Maddy Cusack made history as the first women’s player to reach 100 appearances for Sheffield United, having initially joined the club in 2019. Her untimely passing led to tributes taking place at football grounds across the country, including at Sheffield United men’s games and England’s fixture against Scotland. This tragic event has not only deeply affected her immediate community, but it has also prompted broader discussions within the football landscape.
