Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirms club want to sign Gavi replacement in January

Barcelona is facing a challenging situation with Gavi’s season-ending injury, as President Joan Laporta confirmed that they are actively seeking a replacement midfielder in the January transfer window. The young talent suffered an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament tear while on international duty with Spain. Despite earlier reports suggesting financial constraints might hinder their pursuit, Laporta disclosed that they intend to pursue a loan offer similar to the one that brought Edgar Davids to Barcelona in the 2003-04 season.

Speaking to the EFE news agency, Laporta stated, “If we can successfully navigate the fair play regulations imposed by La Liga, our intention is to secure another midfielder to compensate for Gavi’s absence. We are considering a loan agreement that would extend until the end of the season, akin to our previous experience with Edgar Davids. We are actively working on a couple of deals and believe that we can create the necessary space for them before the year concludes.”

Barcelona’s financial challenges have noticeably affected their ability to sign new players in recent transfer windows, with La Liga imposing wage budget cuts. However, despite these difficulties, Barcelona has already sealed a deal for 18-year-old forward Vitor Roque, who will join the team in January. The acquisition of Roque will involve a transfer fee of €35 million (£30m/$38m), with additional performance-related add-ons.

Before focusing on bolstering their midfield options, Barcelona will first face Almeria in their final La Liga match of 2023. The team led by Xavi has encountered a slight dip in form, with two losses and a draw in their last three matches across all competitions. As they look to close the seven-point gap between themselves and league leaders Real Madrid, Barcelona aims to end the year on a positive note and set the stage for a promising transfer window ahead.
