Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe & Declan Rice included on shortlist for 2023 FIFA Best Men’s Player award

The nominations for men’s and women’s player awards have been announced, with Erling Haaland, Pep Guardiola, Rachel Daly, Lauren James, and Jenni Hermoso among the nominees. However, the recently sacked boss Jorge Vilda did not make the cut.

The nominees for The Best FIFA Men’s Player award include Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland. Additionally, five players from England’s Women’s World Cup finalists are in contention for prizes.

The nominees for the FIFA Best Awards include Manchester City players, their manager Pep Guardiola, and former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, who won a treble with Celtic.

Manchester City has the most nominees on the men’s player list, but it also mentions Declan Rice former West Ham player, who led his team to the Europa Conference League title last season.

Ederson is a strong contender for the goalkeeper prize, competing against Thibaut Courtois and Andre Onana. Onana, who previously played for Inter Milan and now plays for Manchester United, achieved success by winning the Italian Cup and reaching the Champions League final.

The qualifying period for the men’s awards is from December 19, 2022, to August 2023, following Messi’s World Cup victory with Argentina.

The England Lionesses have gained recognition for their impressive performance in reaching the final of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Several players, including Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood, Lauren James, Keira Walsh, and Mary Earps, are nominated for prestigious awards such as The Best FIFA Women’s Player and The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper.

Four Spanish players, including Jenni Hermoso, are hopeful contenders on The Best Women’s Player list, aiming to succeed last year’s winner Alexia Putellas.

Sarina Wiegman and Emma Hayes are nominated for The Best FIFA Women’s Coach prize, while Jorge Vilda, the former head coach of Spain, did not receive a nomination.

The women’s prizes will be awarded based on performances between August 1, 2022, and August 20, 2023.

The nominees for the football awards were selected by FIFA based on their achievements, and the winners will be determined by a jury consisting of coaches, captains, journalists, and fans.
