US Open: Novak Djokovic claims fourth title in New York and historic 24th Grand Slam

Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in the US Open men’s final, securing his 24th Grand Slam title and matching Margaret Court’s record. Djokovic now sits two ahead of Rafael Nadal and four ahead of Roger Federer in terms of Grand Slam victories.

Novak Djokovic won his fourth US Open and his 24th Grand Slam title by defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, making history in the process.

Novak Djokovic secured his fourth US Open title and became the oldest champion in the tournament’s history by defeating Daniil Medvedev with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.

Novak Djokovic, the 36-year-old Serbian tennis player, reclaimed the world No 1 ranking and secured his third Grand Slam title of the year. He emerged victorious in the Australian Open and French Open, and although he suffered a hard-fought loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, Djokovic’s season has been impressive overall.

Djokovic, who wore a tracksuit top adorned with the number 24 and ‘Mamba Forever’ as a tribute to the late NBA star Kobe Bryant, who wore that jersey number, said: “I don’t know where to start, it obviously means the world to me. I’m really living my childhood dream to compete at the highest level in a sport that has given me and my family so much.

“I never imagined I would be standing here talking about 24 Slams. But the last couple of years I felt I had a chance, a shot at history, so why not grab it?

“I thought of doing this T-shirt, eventually, if I get the chance to win the tournament,” Djokovic continued. “Kobe was a close friend, we chatted a lot about the winner’s mentality.

“When I was struggling with injury he was one of the people I relied on the most. He was always there for any kind of counsel, advice. I thought 24 is the jersey that he wore when he became a legend of Lakers and world basketball.”

Novak Djokovic faced off against Daniil Medvedev in a highly anticipated match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with history at stake for Djokovic.

In the 2021 US Open final, the Russian player won his first major title and prevented the Serbian player from achieving a calendar Grand Slam.

Djokovic capitalized on a double-fault by Medvedev and sealed the first set with a powerful backhand winner, winning it in just 48 minutes.

In the closely contested match, the pivotal moment came during an intense second set that lasted over 100 minutes. This set alone surpassed the duration of both players’ first-round matches.

Medvedev put up a strong fight against Djokovic, forcing him to work hard and showing signs of fatigue.

In the match, Djokovic successfully saved a break point with a powerful serve and a well-executed volley.

Medvedev had a chance to win the set against Djokovic, but he couldn’t convert it. Djokovic ultimately won the tie-break and the match.

Medvedev said: “First of all I want to ask Novak what are you still doing here? I mean come on.

“I don’t know when you are planning to slow down a little bit. I feel like I have a good career, I have 20 titles, but you have 24 Grand Slams. Wow!”
