Hansi Flick: Germany manager sacked just nine months before home European Championships after poor form

Germany, post their World Cup group stage exit, has suffered defeats against Belgium, Poland, Colombia, and Japan. Hansi Flick, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich, took charge as the coach in 2021. In a recent friendly match, Germany faced a 4-1 defeat against Japan.

Germany has sacked manager Hansi Flick just nine months before the start of the European Championships next summer.

The former Bayern Munich boss experienced a humiliating 4-1 friendly defeat at home to Japan on Saturday.

Germany’s recent performance has been disappointing, as they have suffered four losses in their last five games and were eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup.

German Football Association president Bernd Neuendorf said: “The men’s senior national team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country.

“For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. So the decision was inevitable.”

The assistant coaches of Flick, Marcus Sorg and Danny Rohl, have been dismissed from their positions.

Former Germany manager Rudi Voller, along with Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner, will be in charge of Tuesday’s friendly against France in Dortmund.

“The aim is to arrange Hansi Flick’s successor as quickly as possible,” the DFB added.

Hans-Dieter Flick, who took over as the manager of the German national team in August 2021, has won only 12 out of 25 matches. He previously served as an assistant to Joachim Low from 2006 to 2014.

Germany’s 58-year-old coach experienced a streak of eight consecutive wins at the beginning of his tenure. However, Germany’s performance at the Qatar World Cup was disappointing as they failed to advance from Group E, losing to Japan, drawing with Spain, and defeating Costa Rica. In the past year, Germany has only managed to secure victories against Oman and Peru.
