United States Soccer Federation Condemns Racist Abuse After Copa America Match defeat against Panama

The United States Soccer Federation has strongly denounced the racist abuse directed at several of its players following a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Panama at the Copa America. Monaco striker Folarin Balogun, Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards, and Juventus pair Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie were all subjected to reprehensible online attacks in the wake of the defeat. Furthermore, Weah’s early red card during the clash further intensified the already tense match in Atlanta.

In the midst of this distressing situation, the Federation released a resolute statement, affirming, “There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behavior. These actions are not only unacceptable but also contrary to the values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as an organization.”

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the US managed to take the lead through an impressive goal by Balogun, only to be swiftly equalized by Panama’s Cesar Blackman. The match intensified as Panama pressed on, ultimately securing victory with a late goal by Jose Fajardo. The intense encounter also saw Panama reduced to 10 men following a red card for Adalberto Carrasquilla, after a reckless challenge on winger Christian Pulisic.

The result leaves the US level on points with Panama as they head into their final group match against Uruguay. With their sights set on advancing to the last 16, the US will need to match Panama’s result against Bolivia in order to progress in the tournament. As hosts of the men’s World Cup in 2026, this tournament holds significant weight for the US national team.
