Hungary’s Varga was visited in the hospital by his manager and team-mate

The Hungarian national team showed solidarity and support for forward Barnabas Varga, who suffered a fractured cheekbone during their Euro 2024 match against Scotland. Despite the unfortunate injury, the team rallied around Varga, with Hungary boss Marco Rossi, coaching staff, and full-back Endre Botka visiting him in the hospital. The Hungarian Football Federation also conveyed the team’s well-wishes for Varga’s recovery.

The incident saw a display of emotion on the pitch, with Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai visibly moved by the situation and later expressing concerns about the response time of the medical staff. However, UEFA clarified that there was no delay in the treatment provided to Varga, affirming that all procedures were followed according to the applicable medical protocols.

The incident has also prompted discussions about medical protocols in football, with Szoboszlai advocating for potential improvements to ensure a swifter response in such critical moments. Additionally, it was highlighted that medical teams at the Euros are now equipped with sheets to use as coverings for serious injuries, demonstrating an adaptation in procedures following this unfortunate event.

As Varga faces a period of recovery and rehabilitation, his absence from the remainder of the tournament will undoubtedly be felt by the Hungarian team. Nevertheless, the solidarity and support shown by the team and the clarifications regarding the medical response aim to bring closure to this concerning incident.
