PSG are withholding £10m from Kylian Mbappe as he demands an £85m payment

Paris Saint-Germain are currently embroiled in a dispute with Kylian Mbappé, over a substantial sum of money that he claims is owed to him. The club is withholding two months’ wages – €12.5 million (£10.6 million) – from Mbappé’s final payment, while the player asserts that he is actually owed €100m (£84.5m) in salary and loyalty bonuses.

Mbappé recently signed a five-year deal with Real Madrid after allowing his contract at PSG to run down, effectively leaving on a free transfer. This decision marked the end of a protracted transfer saga, with Madrid having pursued the talented forward for several years. Notably, in May 2022, Mbappé dramatically turned down Madrid, opting instead to renew with PSG. The contract, billed as running until 2025, included the option to extend.

In response to Mbappé’s departure, PSG are holding back payment of the last two months of his contract, insisting that they do not owe him any additional money. The negotiations between the two parties continue, with PSG citing statements made by Mbappé, particularly after the Champions Trophy match, in which he expressed his desire for the club to be financially protected.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has referenced a “gentleman’s agreement” with Mbappé, claiming that the 25-year-old had pledged to “never do anything to harm the club”. The club believes that Mbappé had agreed to forfeit a significant portion of any bonus, and they are now contesting this arrangement.

In a previous attempt to keep Mbappé at the club, PSG proposed a new contract with a “guaranteed sale clause”, allowing him to leave that summer. However, Mbappé declined the offer and was temporarily excluded from the first team, training instead with the so-called “loft group” – the unwanted players who were away from the main squad. Despite this, he eventually returned to play under coach Luis Enrique, with his final game being the Coupe de France final win over Lyon.

Presently, Mbappé is captaining France at the European Championship, although he missed a recent game due to a broken nose sustained in the opening group match against Austria. His injury has prompted concern at Real Madrid, particularly as he will not be participating in France’s Olympic team at the Paris games, despite initially expressing an interest in doing so.

The ongoing dispute between Kylian Mbappé and PSG has kept the footballing world captivated, and the resolution of this matter is keenly anticipated by fans and pundits alike, as it has significant implications for the future of both the player and the club involved.
